Our Story

We've created this team because we want to raise money and make a difference by participating in Edinburgh Kiltwalk 2020.

Orthodox Christianity is an important part of the history of this country. It may not be known to many, but Scotland has a large number of Orthodox saints, some are very well known (think St Ninian, St Mungo, St Blane, St Theneva, and St Serf for example).
St Ninian was the forerunner of the Celtic Church in the British Isles. After his ordination in Rome, he returned to Scotland where he established a monastery. The roots of Celtic monasticism are found in the lives of the Desert Fathers and Desert Mothers. Celtic Christians called from the world to live as monks and nuns followed their forebears into their own 'deserts', desiring separate and radical lives of prayer. St Patrick became a beacon of light in the West as well as St Columba.

Scotland is full of Orthodox pilgrimage sites that bear witness to the Orthodox Christian faith that used to be alive here in Scotland and throughout Ireland and Britain. High crosses can be found all over Scotland and are carved with Bible stories testifying symbolically to the mystery of the faith.

The Church of the Archangel Gabriel is a place where everyone can connect with the rich Tradition of Orthodoxy and its local ancestors. We celebrate Divine Liturgy and serve all our services in English. We also have life-sized icons of Celtic Saints gracing the walls of our chapel.

We have now outgrown the space and we desperately need a bigger building. There are several potential buildings that can serve this purpose. We also need money to help us set up an Orthodox youth association as there is a big need for this.

We want to continue to be able to live our faith and share it with all who are interested. We want to continue to support our local community and aid the young members of our parish. Every donation is appreciated.
